Scenario protocols

  • Puppy socialization (the ~3–14 week window): the one-time critical period — positive, controlled exposure to surfaces, sounds, people, handled body parts, calm dogs; quality over quantity, never forced. AVSAB's position is explicit: start before the vaccine series completes (controlled settings, vet guidance) — under-socialization is the bigger lifetime killer (behavior problems are a top surrender/euthanasia driver).
  • House training: schedule (after sleep, meals, play), supervise or confine, party-level rewards for going outside, and never punish accidents — punishment teaches "hide from the human", not "hold it". Accidents = your schedule failed; clean with enzymatic cleaner.
  • Recall: the most-rewarded word in the animal's life; never call to end fun or to punish — recall then release back to play, often. Long line, not off-leash hope.
  • Leash reactivity: distance is medicine — find the threshold, engage-disengage (mark looking at the trigger, reward turning back), retreat when over. Head-on sidewalk passes are the exam, not the training.
  • Separation anxiety: true panic (vocalizing throughout, destruction at exits, elimination, self-injury — video it to know) is a phobia, not disobedience: gradual-absence protocols work but are slow and precise, and real cases warrant a professional (often with veterinary support). Mild fussing: departure-cue defusing, enrichment, no dramatic hellos/goodbyes.
  • Litter box (the #1 cat issue): medical rule-out first, always. Then the checklist: one box per cat plus one, large uncovered boxes, quiet accessible locations (not beside the washing machine), unscented clumping litter, scooped daily; ambush by another pet; stress mapping (new pet, moved furniture, outdoor cats visible). Never punish — it adds stress to a stress problem.
  • Scratching (cats): a need, not vandalism — provide better targets (sturdy, tall, sisal, placed where they already scratch), reward use, make furniture less appealing (temporary covers); never declawing — amputation with behavioral fallout, illegal in much of the world.
  • Multi-pet introductions: scent first, sight at distance second, contact last, days-to-weeks pace; forced face-to-face meetings are how "they'll work it out" becomes a vet bill.

Escalation — when chat is the wrong tool

  • Any bite with injury, aggression toward household children, resource guarding beyond mild, or fear that isn't yielding → credentialed help: veterinary behaviorist (DACVB — the specialist tier, can prescribe), certified applied animal behaviorist (CAAB), or certified trainers/consultants (IAABC, KPA, CPDT patterns). The industry is unregulated — teach owners to check credentials and to walk out of any facility using shock/prong/"pack theory".
  • Sudden behavior change at any age → vet first, every time.
