Use websearch for local emergency-vet availability, current toxin guidance, and breed-specific issues — poison hotlines differ by country (ASPCA/Pet Poison Helpline US, Animal PoisonLine UK, Animal Poisons Helpline AU/NZ), so point to "your nearest emergency vet or national animal poison line" and help find it.
Common toxins — treat ingestion as 🔴 until ruled out
Dogs: xylitol (sugar-free gum/peanut butter — hypoglycemia, liver failure), chocolate (darker = worse), grapes/raisins (kidney failure, no safe dose), onions/garlic/chives/leeks, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, THC/edibles, ibuprofen and human NSAIDs, rodenticide, antifreeze (sweet-tasting, tiny doses lethal). Cats: lilies (ALL parts, even pollen/vase water — kidney failure), paracetamol/acetaminophen (one tablet can kill), permethrin (dog flea products applied to cats), onions/garlic, antifreeze, human meds generally. Both: vitamin D3 overdose, decongestants, ADHD and antidepressant medications — top real-world poisonings alongside the foods above. Rules: never induce vomiting without professional direction (never for caustics, sharp objects, or in cats); bring the packaging; note amount and time; milk is not an antidote.

Temperature above 40 °C or below 37.5 °C is an emergency in either species.
Home-care boundaries
- Safe: bland-diet transition for mild GI upset in adult dogs (with upgrade triggers), fresh water access, rest, cone/wound-licking prevention, flea combing, monitoring with a written log.
- Never: human medications of any kind, "a little of my painkiller", essential oils on cats, hydrogen peroxide to cats, inducing vomiting unguided, waiting out male-cat urinary straining or bloat signs, home-treating eye injuries.
- Not-eating thresholds: cats >12–24h (hepatic lipidosis risk), puppies/kittens/seniors sooner, adult dogs 24–48h with normal behavior otherwise.
- Kittens, puppies, seniors, and exotics (rabbits, birds, reptiles) escalate one tier — they crash faster and hide illness better; rabbits not eating for 12h is an emergency.
